A Comparison of Six Photometric Redshift Methods Applied to 1.5 Million Luminous Red Galaxies

چکیده
We present an updated version of MegaZ-LRG (Collister et al. 2007) with photometric redshifts derived with the neural network method, ANNz as well as five other publicly available photo-z codes (HyperZ, SDSS, Le PHARE, BPZ and ZEBRA) for ∼1.5 million Luminous Red Galaxies (LRGs) in SDSS DR6. This allows us to identify how reliable codes are relative to each other if used as described in their public release. We compare and contrast the relative merits of each code using ∼13000 spectroscopic redshifts from the 2SLAQ sample. We find that the performance of each code depends on the figure of merit used to assess it. As expected, the availability of a complete training set means that the training method performs best in the intermediate redshift bins where there are plenty of training objects. Codes such as Le PHARE, which use new observed templates perform best in the lower redshift bins. All codes produce reasonable photometric redshifts, the 1-σ scatters ranging from 0.057 to 0.097 if averaged over the entire redshift range. We also perform tests to check whether a training set from a small region of the sky such as 2SLAQ produces biases if used to train over a larger area of the sky. We conclude that this is not likely to be a problem for future wide-field surveys. The complete photometric redshift catalogue including redshift estimates and errors on these from all six methods can be found at www.star.ucl.ac.uk/∼mbanerji/MegaZLRGDR6/megaz.html

Empirical Photometric Redshifts of Luminous Red Galaxies and Clusters in SDSS
In this work I discuss the necessary steps for deriving photometric redshifts for luminous red galaxies (LRGs) and galaxy clusters through simple empirical methods. The data used is from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). I show that with three bands only (gri) it is possible to achieve results as accurate as the ones obtained by other techniques, generally based on more filters. In particula...
متن کاملA Photometric Redshift Galaxy Catalog from the Red-Sequence Cluster Survey
The Red-Sequence Cluster Survey (RCS) provides a large and deep photometric catalog of galaxies in the z and Rc bands for 90 square degrees of sky, and supplemental V and B data have been obtained for 33.6 deg. We compile a photometric redshift catalog from these 4-band data by utilizing the empirical quadratic polynomial photometric redshift fitting technique in combination with CNOC2 and GOOD...
متن کاملPhotometric redshift using the far - infrared SED
A method for using the sub-millimeter band to determine photometric red-shifts of luminous high-z dusty galaxies is presented. It is based on the observation that local ultra-luminous IR galaxies show an average spectral energy distribution which has a remarkably small dispersion for wavelengths λ > 50µm. The shape of the long wavelength part is independent on whether the local ULIRG possesses ...
متن کاملOptical and Infrared Properties of the 2 Ms Chandra Deep Field-north X-ray Sources
We present an optical and near-infrared catalog for the X-ray sources in the ≈ 2 Ms Chandra observation of the Hubble Deep Field-North region. We have high-quality multicolor imaging data for all 503 X-ray point sources in the X-ray-selected catalog and reliable spectroscopic redshifts for 284. We spectroscopically identify six high-redshift (z > 1) type II quasars (L2−8 keV > 10 ergs s−1) in o...
متن کاملThe Rest-frame Optical Properties of Scuba Galaxies
We present optical and near-infrared photometry for a sample of 96 dusty, far-infrared luminous galaxies. We have precise spectroscopic redshifts for all these galaxies yielding a median redshift of < z>= 2.2. The majority, 78, are submillimeter-detected galaxies lying at z = 0.2–3.6, while the remaining 18 are optically-faint μJy radio galaxies at z = 0.9–3.4 which are proposed to be similarly...
